Beowulf Epic Poem

Prewriting:

Beowulf was an ideal hero. He was a good follower and the strongest of the greats in the world of his times. Beowulf is a real hero characterized by his bravery, strength, honor and unselfishness to place others before him. I would consider the American soldiers as playing the role of a Beowulf in the modern world. Any American soldier is an apt Beowulf.

These soldiers fight for good causes with the aim of protecting people. The epic poem had Beowulf fight destroying the monster that was eating the Hrothgar’s men. The monster was defeated just like the soldiers do to the enemies with the major aim of promoting goodness and stopping the suffering of people. The soldiers and Beowulf are both rewarded for their good deeds. Beowulf got a load of treasure for his people after destroying the monster. On the other hand, the soldiers get rewards for their good actions like having the college education paid for and better jobs in later life.

The poem is from the oral tradition of the ancient times and gives a narration of the adventures as well as the deeds of a heroic figure in the history of a nation. Traits

The Beowulf as a hero has strength as one of his traits. He is strong with powers that cannot be compared with any other hero. This trait is evidence from his capability of wrenching off the arm of the gigantic Grendel. With his abilities, Beowulf contends with the mother of Grendel’s who is monstrous. Just like Hercules and Achilles, Beowulf is stronger than any other conventional warrior and his superhuman abilities elevates him to an epic status.

Beowulf can also be described as being virtuous and honorable. This is brought out several times. He opts to fight Grendel without using man-made weapons but in hand to hand combat. Therefore, he eschews forms of armament besides the strength that he possess. Thus, he shows respectable codes of honor, to an extent of respecting monstrous foes.

Beowulf rules justly, which is a plus to his heroic traits as a capable leader. It is evident that he is not driven by the greed for power. He, at first, refused the throne of his territory and becomes a ruler when there lacks another option. He proceeds to rule for 50 years, a period marked by prosperity and peace. He therefore not only rules as a skilled fighter but also as just ruler in the territory entrusted to him.

A Modern hero

I would consider a soldier as a modern hero in the modern world. This is despite characters like Superman, Spiderman or Batman coming into the picture. Just like Beowulf, soldiers fight for the prosperity of the state through the protection of the territorial integrity. They also get forms of rewards and held in great awe in the society, treated with a lot of respect. Although it may be unrealistic to compare the strength of soldiers to that of Beowulf, they put their lives at stake and thus worth the hero’s title.

Likes and dislikes

I like Beowulf because he is an honest man and always strived towards the good of his people. He fought enemies on the same level in that if they opted for weapons, he would use them too. I also liked the fact that he never got angry when people spoke ill of him. However, I did not like his recklessness. Grendel had a record of killing many people and instead of Beowulf being cautious, he fought opted to fight naked. The fact he allowed Grendel to kill one of his men before killing it shows that, at times he made indifferent decisions. He is, therefore, a self-centered hero compared to the modern heroes although they work for themselves.
